request an appointmentWhat are medication refills?
Medication refills are new supplies of medicines that you take regularly. Many people need to take one or more medicines over long periods. However, it’s important to see your health care provider periodically to review your progress, address any problems like side effects, and ensure your medication has the desired effect.
When you get a prescription, the medications only last for a short time, typically a month. To get more of these medicines, you need to have approval from a medical professional authorized to prescribe drugs.
If you can’t see your primary care doctor soon enough or don’t have one, you could run out of medicines and put your health at risk. The providers at VUH can approve your medication refills online, overcoming these problems and eliminating inconvenient trips to see your doctor when you run out of medication.
What medications can be refilled?
VUH offers medication refill services for many drugs that patients take for chronic health conditions, including:
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Diabetes
- Asthma
- Thyroid disease
- Gastritis
- High cholesterol
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Osteoporosis
Medication refills are also available for birth control pills and other forms of contraception. (Based on the state you are in during your telehealth visit.)
Certain classes of drugs aren’t available through VUH’s medication refill services. These include controlled substances, opioid painkillers, such as oxycodone, buprenorphine, and hydrocodone.
You need to contact your specialist if you require more of these medications.
How do I get my medication refills through telehealth?
Before you run out of the drugs you need, book a secure telemedicine appointment with VUH. You can schedule a video call at a convenient time when you’re at home or work.
You need to provide proof that you’ve previously had a prescription for the medication you want refilled. You can do this by showing your provider an empty prescription bottle with your information on the label.
VUH sends all prescriptions, including medication refills, electronically to the pharmacy of your choice. You can then collect them when it’s convenient.
